The story

In 1983, Ingo and Nadja go to the ski lodge belonging to Nadja’s divorced parents to discuss their relationship problems and find themselves again. Their plans are interrupted when the volleyball team of Nadja’s brother Knut arrives unexpectedly. Knut’s friends, a group from the alternative scene who enjoy skiing and board games, had come to unwind. The carefree mood changes when they hear, “They’ve got Knut.” Apparently arrested, Knut is in the hands of the police, but the group has no further information. As they try to decide how to respond, speculation begins to circulate.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

1983, in the Tyrolean Alps. Ingo and Nadja want to discuss their relationship problems and find themselves again at the ski lodge belonging to Nadja’s divorced parents. Then Nadja’s brother Knut’s volleyball team turns up unexpectedly. Ingo, who wants to have a lengthy discussion about their relationship, will see his relationship become clear. Lars, the younger of the two children and the film’s most likeable character, will be egged on by his older brother Niklas to secretly torment cows. Any outlet will do for them, since their parents’ self-actualization kick is particularly hard on them. Their parents are too preoccupied with themselves to notice what is going on with their children. The volleyball group consists of a few guys from the alternative scene who enjoy skiing and board games. They are Knut’s friends, and they want to unwind. The carefree mood is shattered by the news: “They’ve got Knut.” Apparently, Knut has been arrested and is now languishing in some jail. In fact, no one knows how to behave at a time when demonstrations are part of this scene’s everyday life and people think collectively. Carrying on having fun would be politically incorrect, but moping isn’t the answer either. So one faction keeps tearing around on the slopes and through the woods, while the other discusses their own situation and how they might help Knut. With no further information beyond the fact that Knut is in the hands of the cops, conspiracy theories start to circulate. Is he being mistaken for a terrorist? The German Autumn wasn’t all that long ago, after all. But before anyone can launch a rescue effort, Knut turns up again in excellent spirits and explains that it was all a mistake. Even so, the fragile group dynamic falls apart, and nothing is the same as before for Nadja and Ingo either.
