They fall in love and initially share a carefree time together. The film also presents Nadja’s embittered mother and Nike, a teenager who sits almost motionless on a wall and whom Nadja photographs. As their relationship continues, Darius increasingly feels hemmed in.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Nadja is a young woman with a zest for life. By day, she pursues her studies and works as a photographer; at night, she dances in clubs. There she meets Darius, a civilian-service worker six years her junior. The two fall in love and initially enjoy a carefree time together. In contrast, the film portrays Nadja’s embittered mother and Nike, a teenager who sits almost motionless on a wall and is photographed by Nadja. Darius increasingly feels hemmed in. Nadja becomes pregnant but has an abortion. Afterward, she loses her job as a photographer and, for a time, her place at university. Rejected by Darius, Nadja seeks contact with a former boyfriend and eventually has a brief affair with a club bartender. She has reached a low point. Toward the end of the film, she resumes her studies. Darius seeks to be close to her, but the two have grown apart. In the final scene, Nadja lies on her bed with tears in her eyes.
