Twenty-nine-year-old Valeska “Les” Sommer works as a bicycle courier in Hamburg during the day and parties with her friends at night. One day, her 60-year-old father, Norbert, known as “Bert,” unexpectedly turns up at her door. In addition, Les, who is actually a lesbian and is in an open relationship with Roya, unexpectedly becomes pregnant by Tyler. While Les plans to have an abortion, Tyler is looking forward to becoming a father. Roya, too, can imagine raising a child together with Les. After Les has an accident, Bert takes over her delivery routes. At first, Les does not know that her father has a brain tumor. In the lobby of a customer’s building, he suffers a sudden bout of weakness, and shortly afterward, in his daughter’s presence, he has an epileptic seizure. Bert’s doctors in his hometown referred him to a specialist clinic in Hamburg for a biopsy. However, he did not attend the scheduled appointment because he had taken over his daughter’s bicycle routes. Dr. Dimitriu tells Les and Bert that all the treatments would only prolong his life and would not lead to a recovery. He advises them to make the most of every day he has left. After the biopsy, Dimitriu proposes removing the tumor. The operation would be very risky because the tumor is next to an important artery, but it could extend Bert’s life by more than a year. Bert attends a reading with Les and Tyler by his ex-wife Sonja, Les’s mother, who writes under the pen name Ruby Lawrence. Sonja left her daughter when she was four years old. Bert had hoped that Sonja and Les would grow closer again. Bert survives the operation and is therefore able to witness the birth of his grandchild. Bert’s memorial service takes place as a lively celebration with friends of Les and Bert, just as he had wanted.
