The story
Eleven-year-old Jonas is eager to spend his summer holidays with his grandfather Bernard in Slovakia. Since Jonas’s father died, home has been filled with arguments, but his grandfather is no longer the person Jonas remembers: after his own son’s death and an early retirement, Bernard has become irritable. The holiday days do not bring the fun and adventure Jonas expected. Then Jonas befriends Alex, the girl next door. Together, they come up with a plan to cheer Bernard up, considering ways a new woman, job, or hobby might change his outlook.

At last, summer is here, and eleven-year-old Jonas is looking forward to spending the holidays with his grandpa Bernard in Slovakia, because since his father’s death there has been nothing but arguments at home. But after the death of his son, his grandpa is no longer the way Jonas remembers him. Early retirement has also made him irritable. For several days, there is no sign of the fun-filled, action-packed time Jonas had hoped for. But when he befriends Alex, the girl next door, the two hatch a crazy plan. A new woman, a new job, or a new hobby should cheer his grandpa up.
