As Elsa Sainthier’s trial approaches, a criminal defense lawyer takes on the case of a mother accused of drowning her daughter.

The story

Elsa Sainthier has spent 18 months in prison while under investigation for drowning her daughter, Clara, in a river. Clara was autistic and had multiple disabilities. Elsa believes her daughter suffered because of her autism, while the account attributes that suffering to an ableist society. Silent and unwilling to defend herself, Elsa faces an approaching trial. Her mother calls on Simon Marchand, a criminal defense lawyer whose career and life have been on hold since a professional and personal misstep ten years earlier. Simon takes on Elsa’s defense as the case moves toward court.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Elsa Sainthier has been in prison for 18 months. She is under investigation for drowning her daughter Clara in a river. Clara was autistic and had multiple disabilities; Elsa imagines that Clara suffered because of her autism, when in fact she suffered because of an ableist society. Elsa is shut away in silence and shows no willingness to defend herself. As her trial approaches, her mother calls on Simon Marchand, a criminal defense lawyer whose career and life have been on hold since a professional and personal misstep ten years earlier. Simon defends Elsa in court, but also against society, and gently helps restore her humanity. Lawyer Simon Marchand argues that Elsa killed her daughter to put an end to the “irreparable suffering of an innocent being.” Elsa Sainthier is ultimately sentenced to five years in prison, with three years suspended—that is, two years to serve—for killing her child.
