After a misunderstanding drives him from home, a middle-aged bank worker moves in with university students and gets an unexpected chance to renew his life.

The story

Arnaldo Nardi, a forty-five-year-old bank worker, enjoys a settled routine with his wife Anita and their nine-year-old twin daughters. His easygoing life is upended when a pair of pink handcuffs left in his scooter by his womanizing colleague leads Anita to suspect an affair and throw him out. Instead of dwelling on the accusation, Arnaldo takes a room in a shared apartment with university students. As he adjusts to living among people much younger than himself, he becomes involved in their everyday challenges and begins to experience a change from the monotonous routine he once preferred.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Arnaldo Nardi is a forty-five-year-old man with a good job and a lovely family, consisting of his wife, Anita, and their nine-year-old twin daughters, Martina and Federica. Arnaldo is calm, easygoing, indecisive, and fond of the routine of his life. He works at a bank and often goes out with two colleagues who are also his friends: Giovannelli and Floriano Esposito. One evening, Giovannelli, a notorious womanizer, borrows Arnaldo’s scooter to visit one of his girlfriends, but forgets a pair of pink handcuffs labeled “Natasha” in the under-seat compartment. The next day, Arnaldo’s wife finds the handcuffs and throws him out of the house, suspecting that he is having an erotic affair with another woman. Arnaldo makes a very half-hearted attempt to declare his innocence, but is sent away. Rather than feel sorry for himself, Arnaldo seizes this opportunity to reinvent his life, which had by then become boring and monotonous. That same day, he finds a shared apartment with some university students who are much younger than he is. Moving in with them, Arnaldo shares their joys and fears, helping them deal with their respective problems: Camilla, a pregnant veterinary student from Catania, finds the courage to tell her parents about her pregnancy; Marco, a medical student who wants to become a surgeon but cannot stand the sight of blood, overcomes his fear when he is forced to deliver Camilla’s baby; Anna, a student from Rome, reconciles with her father, a detective; and Edoardo, a mixed-race economics student from Perugia, manages to win acceptance from Cavaliere Mazzarra, the racist father of his girlfriend, Clelia. The four young people also help Arnaldo, giving him greater self-confidence and the chance to enjoy a second youth, albeit a temporary and substitute one. In the end, Anita discovers that her husband has not cheated on her and takes him back.
