After leaving Italy for Brazil, Augusta follows the river in search of meaning, resisting the missionary ways around her.
The story
Augusta leaves Italy for Brazil and lets the river carry her to Indigenous communities where Sister Franca, a friend of her mother, hopes to evangelize. Augusta is unmoved by religious appeals and resists the missionary approach, choosing instead to “be earth.” Continuing alone, she rents a room in Manaus and settles in a favela, hoping to give meaning to her journey. Welcomed by Arizete, a mother and grandmother in a large family, she finds comfort in human connections amid her grief.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Augusta is a young woman on a journey. Having left Italy for Brazil, she lets herself be carried along by the river’s current, coming ashore and entering the lives of the Indigenous people whom Sister Franca, a friend of her mother’s, wants to evangelize with prayers and glowing baby Jesus figurines. Deaf to the call of any god and resistant to missionary ways, Augusta makes the secular choice to “be earth,” continuing on alone and renting a room in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas on the banks of the Rio Negro. Determined to give meaning to her “navigation,” she settles in the favela, where poverty is brushed by a wealth that buys men, women, and children. Welcomed by Arizete, a mother and grandmother in a large family, Augusta finds comfort in human relationships amid her pain and grief: a lost child, a vanished husband, a life in ruins. But the distress of a new friend persuades her to resume her journey and return to the river. After landing on an island, she withdraws from the world and from other people, sinking into inner silences and the ancestral sounds of nature.
