Full plot (contains spoilers)
Based on Stendhal’s short story of the same name, the film tells the love story of Vanina Vanini, a young Roman aristocrat, and Pietro Missirilli, a member of the Carbonari. The two protagonists experience with equal intensity the conflict between tradition and revolution, and between social commitment and their love story. The figure of Napoleon is emblematic: in a passionate exchange with Vanina, Pietro quotes his reply to some people from Brescia who swore that they loved liberty more than any other Italian patriots: “Oh yes, they love talking about liberty to their mistresses.” Pietro’s commitment to his comrades and to building a new world therefore leaves no room for compromise. Vanina is exactly the same: she puts her love for Pietro first and sees Napoleon as a man who, blinded by the same madness as her beloved, has drenched the world in blood.
