When the adults in their blended family cannot agree on Christmas, the children secretly head for Grandma’s mountain home to bring everyone together.
The story
Eight-year-old Nina is looking forward to Christmas, but her blended family is grieving the grandmother who brought them together the previous year. The adults cannot agree on how to celebrate, and their meeting ends in an argument. Fed up with the bickering, Nina and the other children launch Operation Christmas: using Jerry’s credit card, they secretly travel to Grandma’s house in the Tyrolean mountains. They find the house without electricity, heating or running water, and receive help from a nearby resident who covers for them. When the parents realize the children are gone, they set off to search for them, but their journey is complicated by a blocked credit card, an immobilized rental car and a breakdown in the snow.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Eight-year-old Nina is looking forward to Christmas. The previous year, the blended family—made up of seven adults and six children—had celebrated with their grandmother, who had held them all together. Sadly, she is no longer alive. This year, the adults can’t agree on how to celebrate Christmas, and a meeting to discuss it ends in an argument. Even Andrea, a self-help author, and her partner Nicole can’t change that. Andrea’s ex-husband Jerry, Nina’s stepfather, has surprised his wife Bea with a trip to the Maldives. Shirin, Jerry’s second ex-wife, wants to break up with her boyfriend Till. Fed up with the adults’ bickering, the children, including Nina’s sixteen-year-old brother Jeremy, launch Operation Christmas. Using Jerry’s credit card, the children secretly set off for Grandma’s house in the Tyrolean mountains to celebrate Christmas together there. However, the house has no electricity, heating or running water. The children get help from Kroizleitner, who lives near Grandma’s house and covers for them. The parents begin searching for the children. Their efforts are hampered, among other things, by the credit card, which Jerry has had blocked and can no longer use to pay for anything himself; a rental car that has been immobilized; and a car breaking down in the snow. During the journey, Nicole discovers that Andrea’s artificial insemination did not work, and that Horst is the father of Andrea’s child. Bea accidentally learns that Jerry’s company is on the verge of collapse. After an argument, she throws him out of the car. He falls down a slope and is left lying in the cold. When his phone has no reception and he can’t call for help, Kroizleitner happens upon him and rescues him. In his desperate situation, Jerry records a voice message for his children and wives, apologizing to them. Because there is no reception, however, the message is only sent later. Meanwhile, Nina misses her mother Bea and wishes that they could all celebrate Christmas together. The children get in touch with their parents by phone; by this point, the parents have also arrived at Grandma’s house. But Nina has now disappeared. After an argument over what to do next, Andrea calls for everyone to pull together, and they set off to look for Nina as a group. Along the way, Nicole and Andrea reconcile, as do Bea and Jerry. Jerry finds Nina in the little chapel where she had celebrated Christmas with Grandma the previous year. In the end, the whole blended family celebrates Christmas peacefully together at Grandma’s house, and Jerry learns that Bea is pregnant and that he is going to become a father once more, because, as Grandma always used to say, “A family can never be big enough.”
