When staff cuts threaten her job, Nina wonders whether a possible pregnancy could protect her.
The story
Nina is a career-focused employee at a schoolbook publisher who hopes a project to help children learn German will earn her a promotion. But the publishing house is sold, her boss has left, and the new owner plans drastic staff cuts that will affect her. After spending the night with a man she barely knows, Nina feels queasy and wonders whether she might be pregnant. She realizes that pregnancy could protect her from losing her job, and considers that possibility as a way to keep it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Nina, a career-focused publishing employee, sometimes considers having children, but puts that wish aside because she would rather pursue her career. For quite some time, she has been asking her boss to let her carry out a project of her own, one that would make it easier for children to learn German. She has an ulterior motive, too: she expects the project to be a success for the schoolbook publisher and hopes it will earn her a promotion. But things turn out differently. One day, Nina is told that the publishing house has been sold, that her boss has already left the company, and that the new owner intends to make drastic staff cuts. She, too, will be affected. Suddenly, Nina feels queasy. She quickly realizes that she spent the previous night with a man she had not even known until the day before yesterday. What if the sudden nausea has something to do with pregnancy? It is a possibility, and being pregnant would, of course, protect Nina from being fired. In the end, however, this “white lie” gets Nina into serious trouble, because she discovers that the very man she spent the night with is her new boss at the publishing house.
