A young mother trying to build a stable family must navigate her son’s father’s return and her own father’s plan to take her younger brother away.
The story
Twenty-one-year-old Sara lives in social housing on Barcelona’s outskirts with other young people and raises her six-month-old son, Joel, alone while working part-time around the city. When Joel’s father, Dani, returns from grape-harvest work in France, Sara’s wish to build a family resurfaces. She also cares for her troubled eight-year-old brother, Martín, who is at a children’s center. Sara hopes to keep Martín away from their father by making a home with Dani, though Dani is unconvinced. Then Sara’s father, Manuel, newly released from prison and working clearing furniture from repossessed buildings, wants to take Martín to Jaén.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sara (Greta Fernández) is a 21-year-old woman whose life is marked by loneliness and hardship: she wears a hearing aid in her right ear, has no mother, and has no home of her own. She depends on public services, living in social housing on the outskirts of Barcelona with other young people who share an apartment and are in the same vulnerable situation. Sara is the mother of six-month-old Joel, whom she cares for alone while working part-time at various places around the city to earn money. Ramón and Flora, the owners of the bar where she often helps out, assist her with childcare. Meanwhile, Dani (Àlex Monner), Joel’s father, returns to Barcelona after working the grape harvest in France. Dani’s presence reminds Sara of her own desire to start a family. Sara also takes responsibility for the upbringing of Martín, her troubled eight-year-old younger brother, who is at a children’s center. She intends to keep him away from their father by building a home with Dani, although Dani is not convinced. Alongside dealing with these situations every day, Sara discovers that her father Manuel (Eduard Fernández), a convicted thief who has just been released from prison, has found a job clearing furniture from repossessed buildings and wants to take Martín to Jaén. Overwhelmed by sadness, isolation, and loneliness, Sara’s attempts to be happy and build a stable life are beset by sudden, dramatic turns that are far removed from the carefree outlook of privileged young people who can enjoy life. Seeing Manuel as a bad influence because of his volatile nature and alcohol-related problems, Sara proposes to her father that she obtain custody of Martín. Manuel and Martín, who loves his father, oppose the older sister’s plan and make things even more difficult for Sara.
