Full plot (contains spoilers)
Bookseller Marie Meyer is naturally a helpful woman. With her kind-hearted nature, she stands up for those around her. She also helps Tommy, who suffers from asthma. In the process, she discovers that his parents are facing serious problems. To help Tommy fight his serious illness, she resolves to sort out the conflicts in his family. She has plenty of problems of her own, though: her little reading café is heavily in debt and on the verge of insolvency, as the banks refuse to give her any new loans, let alone grant her an extension on her repayments.
