A debt-ridden count hopes an inherited castle will save him, but a co-heir, a ghost, and a dangerous business connection complicate the sale.
The story
Count Giovanni degli Uberti is on the verge of financial ruin after a string of failed business ideas leaves him deep in debt. A lawyer struggles to protect him from creditors, until Giovanni inherits a magnificent castle from his uncle. A Swiss real estate company is prepared to pay a large sum to convert it into a hotel, apparently offering a way out of his troubles. But Giovanni learns that his uncle also left a tenth of the castle to the nurse who cared for him, making a sale impossible unless Giovanni can secure her share. The castle has a further complication: it is haunted by an ancestor with an unusual curse.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Count Giovanni degli Uberti is a nobleman on the verge of financial ruin; none of his business ideas has succeeded, and he is up to his neck in debt. His lawyer no longer knows how to save him from the creditors who want to take all his property. But then a stroke of luck comes his way: he has inherited a magnificent castle from his uncle Ubezio, and a Swiss real estate company is ready to pay him 2 billion lire to turn it into a hotel. All his problems seem to be solved, but the count discovers that he is not the only heir: the nurse who cared for his uncle in his final days was left 10% of the castle. If he cannot get his hands on that 10%, he will not be able to sell the castle to the Swiss real estate company. What is more, the castle is haunted by the ghost of Guiscardo, his ancestor, who was cursed to wander its rooms until he manages to make love to a woman. As if that were not enough, the wealthy Swiss real estate developer who wants to buy the castle is also the husband of Giovanni’s mistress: if he recognizes him, the deal is off.
