A Texan returning to Bavaria to claim an inheritance discovers that his new hotel is a brothel and tries to reform it.

The story

Jonathan Schmidinger, a short, stout Texan who once emigrated from Bavaria and became known in Texas as John Smith, returns to claim an inheritance: a hotel left to him by his late stepbrother. After his red suitcase is stolen at Munich Airport, he pursues it through a minor odyssey and discovers drugs inside when it is recovered. He eventually reaches the hotel and checks in incognito to get an honest first impression. He soon learns that the establishment is actually a brothel. Horrified by its vice, Schmidinger fires the prostitutes and staff, hoping to turn it into a respectable lodging house, but the pimps resist his effort.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A short, stout Texan in a cowboy hat arrives at Munich Airport. His name is Jonathan Schmidinger, and he once emigrated from Bavaria to Texas, where he went by the name John Smith. After many years, he has returned to claim an inheritance: his late stepbrother has left him a hotel in the quiet town of Heidelberg. Soon after arriving, Schmidinger’s red suitcase is stolen. After a minor odyssey in pursuit of his stolen belongings, which have meanwhile been put to other uses—in the “recovered” suitcase he finds drugs—he finally reaches his hotel. Wanting to get an unvarnished first impression of the establishment, Schmidinger checks in incognito. He soon has to face the fact that his stepbrother ran nothing other than a brothel. Horrified by the all-pervasive immorality and vice that rule the place, Schmidinger promptly fires all the prostitutes and staff, intending to turn the brothel into a “respectable” lodging house again. But the pimps of the women in the sex trade are unwilling to let themselves be pushed aside so easily, and set about making the new owner pay for his “clean-up campaign.” Schmidinger is summarily kidnapped, taken away in a helicopter, and dropped by parachute in the Alpine foothills. But this cold-blooded dispossession works out in his favor, since it is how he meets the woman who will become the love of his life. After a few more incidents—among other things, a village policeman initially mistakes him for a spy—the happy couple opens an inn that really is nothing more than a place to stay.
