The story

In a society ruled by a caste system, people who fail to keep pace with competition are killed and turned into meat, earning the name “White Square.” As children, Marie and Philippe become wards of the state and are sent to an orphanage where terrifying educational methods shape them. Marie saves Philippe from suicide, and they grow up together. Two decades later, they appear to be a wealthy married couple, though Philippe has become a ruthless executive who subjects his employees to brutal, impossible tasks. Marie, disillusioned by their life and grieving several miscarriages, despises the authoritarian society her husband serves. She resolves to challenge the system and urges Philippe to join her in trying to save their relationship.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A world controlled by a caste system. Society has developed to feed on its weakest members. Those who play the “game” correctly rise to higher positions and become more powerful. Those who cannot afford to live or cannot keep up with the competition are killed and turned into meat. They are known as the “White Square.” Two children, Marie (Adèle Exarchopoulos) and Philippe (Majid Hives), become wards of the state and are placed in an orphanage with terrifying educational methods. Philippe is a teenager brought to the orphanage after his mother became a “White Square.” After Marie saves Philippe from suicide, they grow up together in a dehumanized world. Twenty years later, after a long process of indoctrination, they form what appears to be a wealthy married couple, outwardly serving as instruments of social coercion. In particular, as an adult, Philippe (Sami Bouajila) is a cold and ruthless business executive. He is a soulless breaker of spirits, imposing physically impossible and increasingly brutal tasks on his subordinates. Marie (Julie Gayet), struggling to cope after several miscarriages, is disillusioned with what they have become. Marie wants children and hates the dictatorial society that Philippe helps uphold. She decides to defy the system to preserve what remains of their love. She tries to force him to save their relationship and join her in rebellion. The film follows their struggle to keep existing as a couple despite adverse circumstances.
