A forgotten bag in Poland sets off a chain of reluctant handoffs, leaving two hapless hot-dog vendors tasked with bringing it to Vienna.

The story

Spanish crime boss Carlos has left a bag in Poland and hires car dealer Harry to bring it to Vienna. Harry passes the assignment to Schorsch, who would rather watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans and has lost his driving licence. Schorsch hands it to Mao, but she is caring for her niece and passes it on to hot-dog stand operators Max Durst and Hans Wurst. Hoping to save money, the pair plan to hitchhike to Łódź, but end up taking the train. When Harry discovers Schorsch has not gone to Poland, he makes him follow the two men, intending to watch them deliver the bag safely.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Spanish crime boss Carlos has forgotten a bag in Poland. He hires car dealer Harry to bring it to Vienna; Harry passes the job on to the crook Schorsch. Schorsch is not keen on the idea: first, because his driver’s license has been taken away, and second, because he would rather watch the television broadcast of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. So he hands the mission over to his acquaintance Mao. But since Mao has her niece staying with her for the weekend and needs to look after her, she in turn passes the job on to the hapless hot-dog stand operators “Max Durst” and “Hans Wurst.” To save money for their trip, Max and Hans want to hitchhike to Łódź. When that does not work out, they eventually take the train after all. This is the start of a series of unforeseen events. When Harry realizes that Schorsch has not gone to Poland himself, he forces him to follow Max and Hans. However, for convenience, Harry only wants to watch them safely deliver Carlos’s bag home. Once they arrive in Łódź, the two have other concerns at first besides the bag. When they pass a Polish butcher, Hans decides to buy some Polish sausages first. After that, they take the tram to the hotel in question and get caught riding without tickets along the way. Finally, they pick up the bag from the agreed place, a hotel. On the spur of the moment, Hans and Max decide to get a room and go out in Łódź that evening. As they leave the hotel, they eat two bread rolls they brought with them. Mao’s niece made them and apparently topped them with psychedelic mushrooms, since they have a hallucinogenic effect. Before going to the disco, Max gets some ecstasy, and over the course of the evening the mushrooms begin to take effect. The two have an extreme trip, during which they see most of the people around them as having dog heads. Since Hans assumes he has not taken any drugs but is nevertheless high, Max explains it to him as the phenomenon of a “contact high” (see background). At the disco, they meet Gretchen, one of the few guests without a dog’s head. Max starts flirting with her, but Hans soon leads him back to the hotel against his will, where their intoxicated state continues into the following morning. They go to the station and board the wrong train, which takes them to Drogomyśl in the Polish countryside instead of back to Vienna. Max meets Gretchen again at the station and eats hash cookies with her, sending them both on another trip. Then comes the showdown at a farm, where Harry and Schorsch have gone looking for the bag, along with Max and Hans. At the end, Polish police “pigs” are shown, who also become intoxicated after smoking joints they found in the wreck of Schorsch’s Ford Mustang.
