The story
Herbert and Maria celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. The gathering brings several strained relationships into focus: Angelika and her husband Harald are in a marital crisis; Mark, a student for many years, longs for his girlfriend Sarah’s acceptance and respect; and the adventurous youngest daughter, Laura, introduces her new boyfriend, Jo. Even Herbert and Maria, whose marriage their children admire, have secrets. Maria has an admirer and is considering leaving Herbert after the celebration. Meanwhile, Maria’s mother Rita senses the younger generation’s troubles and draws on her experience to help guide the family through the tensions.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Herbert and Maria celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren. Their children, who are married themselves, bring the problems in each of their marriages to the party. Angelika and her husband Harald are going through a marital crisis. Mark, who has been a student forever, is waiting for his girlfriend Sarah to accept and respect him. Laura, the youngest and most adventurous, brings Jo, her new boyfriend, to the gathering. Herbert and Maria, whose exemplary marriage makes them admired by their children, have secrets of their own, too. Maria has an admirer and plans to leave her husband after the celebration. Maria’s mother, Rita, now a great-grandmother, suspects that the children are having problems and draws on the wisdom of age to resolve their conflicts skillfully. In this way, she discreetly prevents Angelika, Harald’s wife, from having an affair with Jo, Laura’s boyfriend. Through Rita, the conflicts are resolved and the marriages saved. The film’s title is the name of Rita’s favorite song, which was the last dance she shared with her late husband.
