As Hans approaches retirement, he and Rita feel anxious about the free time ahead rather than eager to embrace it.
The story
Hans has worked as an educator for decades and most recently as a school principal; with retirement approaching, he and his wife, Rita, face an uncertain change to their established routine. Their son, Tom, moved out long ago, and Rita enjoys morning swims and the quiet at home. Rather than looking forward to the free time ahead, both feel anxious and unsure. Rita, in particular, sees no reason for anything to change.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hans worked as an educator for decades and most recently as a school principal; now his retirement is approaching. He and his wife, Rita, have settled into a well-established routine. Their son, Tom, moved out long ago, and Rita enjoys her morning swims and the peace and quiet at home. Instead of looking forward to their newly gained free time, the two feel anxious and uncertain. As far as Rita is concerned, there is no reason to change anything. Then a car accident happens at night, with Rita at the wheel. A young man Tom's age loses his life. It is a devastating blow that changes everything.
