A space-loving autistic boy turns a summer with his grandparents into a personal mission to navigate change and noise.
The story
Ten-year-old Tom is autistic, fascinated by space, and dreams of becoming an astronaut. Before he can set off for Mars, however, he must spend the summer holidays with his grandparents in the countryside. Tom dislikes change and noise, and the color red most of all, so the unfamiliar household throws his orderly world into turmoil. His mother, who has to go abroad for a while, encourages him by saying that if he can manage at Grandma and Grandpa’s, he can manage anywhere. With his older siblings Elmar and Nina, Tom faces the challenges of his grandparents’ hectic life as he tries to adapt to his new surroundings.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ten-year-old Tom, who is autistic, is fascinated by space and dreams of becoming an astronaut. But before he can set off for Mars, he faces a very different challenge: spending the summer holidays with his grandparents in the countryside. Tom’s orderly world is thrown into turmoil, because he dislikes both change and noise—and the color red most of all. His mother, who has to go abroad for a while, encourages him, though: if he can manage at Grandma and Grandpa’s, he can manage anywhere. So Tom embarks on a personal “space mission” that puts him in unfamiliar situations. Together with his older siblings, Elmar and Nina, he navigates the grandparents’ hectic life, discovers new perspectives, and realizes that the unfamiliar can have its charms, too.
