Two Berlin officers escort a Colombian woman caught smuggling drugs, while one prepares to leave the force and make a fresh start.

The story

At Berlin Airport, customs officers become suspicious when a Colombian woman’s statements are inconsistent and her passport is false. Examination shows she was trying to smuggle drugs from Colombia into Germany as a body packer. Fredo Schulz and Milan Filipovic are assigned to escort her to the police station. For Filipovic, it is his last day on the job; he feels guilty about his girlfriend’s death and hopes to make a fresh start. When the woman insists on stopping to use the toilet, they pull over at a rest area, where a man knocks Schulz down.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

When a Colombian woman arrives at Berlin Airport, customs officers become suspicious because her statements are inconsistent and her passport is false. A closer examination reveals that she was trying to smuggle drugs from Colombia into Germany as a body packer. Fredo Schulz and his colleague Milan Filipovic are assigned to collect her from customs and take her to the police station. It is Filipovic’s last day on the job, as he has decided to leave the force. He feels guilty about his girlfriend’s death; she was shot during his last case, and he wants to make a fresh start. On the way to headquarters, an incident occurs when the Colombian woman insists that she needs to use the toilet. They stop at a rest area, where a man knocks Schulz down. When Filipovic draws his gun, the stranger shoots him. Schulz is in shock and drinks himself into a stupor. After Schulz and his colleagues have attended Filipovic’s funeral, rookie Radu Lupescu is assigned as Schulz’s partner. On their first patrol together, Schulz has only one thing on his mind: finding the person responsible for his former partner’s death. A small-time street dealer gives him a lead on a corrupt customs officer at the airport. An investigation of the officers who might be involved turns up nothing, since none of the colleagues working there has any disciplinary record. Schulz and Lupescu therefore go straight to the airport and try to stir things up. It works, and customs officer Bruno Bogdan quickly arouses suspicion when he leaves work shortly after talking to Schulz. Bogdan contacts his colleague Ronny Herzog and suggests that they take a break for the time being. But Herzog urgently needs money for his wife, who is seriously ill with cancer, and insists on carrying on. They agree, however, that the drug dealer Marlon Prokop, with whom they work and who supplies them with body packers, could become a problem. They are right: after the police happen to apprehend the Colombian woman they were looking for at the airport, they learn from her not only the names of the corrupt customs officers, but also the name of her dealer. Schulz and his new colleague arrest Marlon Prokop and use ballistic analysis to prove that he shot Milan Filipovic. Prokop’s testimony would be important in securing solid evidence against Bogdan and Herzog, but a motorcyclist shoots him while he is being transported. Bogdan is arrested because the motorcycle is conclusively identified as his, and because the Colombian woman, Paz Flores, is also willing to testify against him and Ronny Herzog. In return, she and her young son are promised permanent residence permits.
