A struggling marriage swindler risks his domestic peace when he spends the money set aside for a washing-machine repair on a costly scheme.

The story

Herbert Krugschenk is a marriage swindler whose wife, Marta, actively helps with his scams, but business has slowed and he is close to bankruptcy. Their son Sigi, a master thief newly released from prison, contributes to the household budget; Marta believes he earns his money honestly on an oil rig. She has long wanted their broken washing machine repaired, but Herbert instead uses the earmarked money to buy an expensive ring to lure a female target. Marta resents struggling at home while he sips champagne with wealthy women, and leaves in anger, bringing their domestic conflict to a head.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Without his beloved wife Marta, marriage swindler Herbert Krugschenk is only half as good. She actively helps him with his scams. Business, however, used to be better. The singles market is flooded with sociable people, and he can barely cover the cost of pursuing new women. He is on the verge of bankruptcy. Fortunately, his son Sigi, a master thief, has just been released from prison and can now contribute a little to the household budget. Herbert’s wife Marta has long wished that their broken washing machine would finally be repaired. But she mustn’t learn where the money comes from, because her son Sigi is still the greatest source of pride in her life. She believes he earns his money honestly on an oil rig. But Herbert takes the money that was meant to repair the washing machine and buys an expensive ring to lure one of his female targets. This risks upsetting the domestic harmony, because Marta can’t accept that she is struggling at home while he sips champagne with wealthy women. So she promptly moves out in a fury. Herbert immediately goes looking for her and suspects she may be staying with his colleague Kai von Schaurot, who has had his eye on Marta for a long time. Kai is a marriage swindler too. Marta, however, has moved in with her daughter Cornelia. Sigi now tries to take his mother’s place around the house as best he can. Marta’s absence leaves Herbert without not only his drive but also his charm. After all, she used to take care of all the details. But instead of overcoming his stubbornness and asking her to come back, he wastes his energy being jealous of the arrogant Schaurot. He tells himself that Schaurot’s success can only be because having even more money makes it possible to charm even richer women. So Herbert borrows some of Sigi’s previously stolen money and checks into a Swiss grand hotel, teeming with wealthy single women. With Sigi as his chauffeur, he sets out to hunt for prey. But he fails again and again. In the end, he has to realize that without his beloved Marta, he is only half as good a marriage swindler.
