When a former zookeeper hoping to save seals in Canada is assigned a low-paid job at a group home, his polished friend discovers that his investment firm is fraudulent.
The story
Wolfgang, a polished former menswear specialist, is back at work advising retirees on investments and promising high returns. His friend Günther, a former zookeeper, dreams of going to Canada to save seals, but has no money. The job center denies his request for travel support and assigns him a low-paid driver and helper job at a group home instead. On his first day, the regular caregiver is ill, leaving Günther to look after three residents on his own. Meanwhile, Wolfgang learns that his investment firm is fraudulent. Having spent money in expectation of a commission, he is overdrawn and fears his wife finding out.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Wolfgang, a trained menswear specialist who dresses well and is always careful about his clothes and choice of words, has found work again. In good faith, he advises retirees on investments for Maxima Plus Finanz AG and promises them, at great length, returns of eleven percent. His buddy Günther—long-term unemployed, a former zookeeper, burly and rough-hewn, and in every way the opposite of Wolfgang—would like to save seals in Canada from being slaughtered. To prepare, he has taken 60 hours of English classes at the adult education center and knows everything about Canada. The only thing missing for his happiness is money. He is pinning all his hopes on the employment office approving a travel subsidy for him. But Ms. Radermacher at the job center puts a stop to that. Without mercy, she assigns him a €1.50-an-hour job as a driver and helper in a group home for people with disabilities. Its residents are Tina, a defiant young woman with Down syndrome; Robert, who uses a wheelchair; and Hans, who has Asperger syndrome. Since their caregiver, Urte, has fallen ill with a virus, Günther has to look after the trio on his own on his very first day. Meanwhile, Wolfgang learns through the media about the fraudulent practices of Maxima Plus Finanz AG. His problem is that, expecting a large commission, he has already treated himself to quite a few things and is now overdrawn. His wife must not find out. Günther quickly finds a solution to their money problems. Because of his Asperger syndrome, Hans can recognize the logic behind random sequences of numbers. He loves precise daily routines and has a special knack for picking the right numbers at roulette. Wolfgang, Günther, and the three group-home residents dress up elegantly, take Wolfgang’s esteemed wife’s donation money—and their little daughter as well—and head to the casino together, where they experience several tense situations.
