When a mother claims her missing son was taken, a skeptical commissioner investigates an adoption whose legality is beginning to unravel.
The story
Detective Martin Brühl is contacted after Dina Ritter reports her young son, Benji, missing and insists that Imke Sachtleben has taken him. Dina's brother says she is deluded: she lost a child at fifteen, and seeing a little boy recently brought back her old distress. Brühl initially refuses her request for a maternity test because she has not provided enough evidence. The Sachtlebens say they adopted Benji after his biological mother died, but Brühl is unsettled by the circumstances. Dina recalls giving birth at home and caring for the baby before he vanished from his crib. As Brühl pursues the case without his colleagues' support, Imke begins questioning whether her husband's arrangement was legal.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Detective Martin Brühl is notified when young mother Dina Ritter reports her son Benji missing. She is certain that he has been abducted by a woman named Sachtleben. According to her brother, Tobias Ritter, his sister is not in her right mind about this. She lost her child when she was fifteen and, despite therapy, never came to terms with it. After seeing a little boy a few days ago, her old problem resurfaced. But Dina Ritter refuses to give up. She comes to Brühl at the police station and asks him to help her. He should arrange a maternity test, which would prove that Benji is her son. But Brühl does not have enough evidence to do that and has to send her away. Meanwhile, Imke Sachtleben contacts the police because Dina Ritter has harassed her several times. The commissioner learns that the Sachtlebens adopted the boy two years ago because his biological mother had died. Brühl finds this rather strange and is inclined to look into it. Dina Ritter claims she gave birth to her child at home and then cared for her baby until he suddenly disappeared from his crib. The police did not believe her at the time and had her committed to a psychiatric hospital. Brühl asks her to write down as many details and memories as she can recall from that time with her child. Since his colleagues think he is barking up the wrong tree, he investigates on his own. Imke Sachtleben, too, has growing doubts about whether the adoption was legal. Her husband had arranged the whole thing, but the adoption papers have disappeared. When she goes to her husband's company, she runs into Dina Ritter's brother, who has been a department head there for just a few days. That makes it clear to her that something is “rotten” here. Brühl also gets on Tobias Sachtleben's trail when he discovers that he has known the Ritters for a long time and was Dina Ritter's PE teacher at school. Since Dina was a minor, her brother had blackmailed Sachtleben into taking the child in once it became clear that he was the father. But Tobias Ritter did not want money; he wanted his sister all to himself, as she had suddenly given her love to the child. He had promised her he would always be there for her, and the child did not fit into that arrangement. Since his sister simply will not give up trying to get her child back, he abducts the boy and plans to kill him, but in the end he cannot go through with it. Dina Ritter is happy that people finally believe her and that she gets her boy back.
