When a man is found murdered during Holy Week, Inspector Sifkovits investigates with help from his mother and her circle—while evidence points toward her.

The story

During Holy Week, Inspector Sifkovits is visiting his mother, Baba, when he learns that Ferdinand “Fredi” Horvatits has been murdered. He begins investigating with help from Baba and the women known as the “headscarf mafia.” Fredi had lost large sums through speculation and had few friends besides his sister Alexandra. The case turns toward Baba when her fingerprints are found on the knife and she is taken into pre-trial detention. Sifkovits believes she is innocent and suspects Reinhard Frena, who had argued with Fredi, while his superior thinks Baba had a motive.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Group Inspector Sifkovits is visiting his mother Baba during Holy Week when he receives news that Ferdinand “Fredi” Horvatits has been stabbed to death. The murder weapon was an egg-scoring knife. There is no blood at the place where the body was found, either because the crime scene was cleaned or because the body was found somewhere other than the crime scene. The electronic security lock recorded an entry the previous day at 6:33 p.m., presumably by the killer. The door code is the victim’s date of birth. With the help of the so-called “headscarf mafia,” consisting of Hilda Resetarits, Resl Grandits, and his mother, Inspector Sifkovits begins his investigation. Fredi had lost large sums of money through speculation and had few friends apart from his sister Alexandra, known as Alex. At the time of the crime, Alex was filming a live video for social media. The fingerprints on the egg-scoring knife found in the victim’s neck belong to Baba. She had also taken her son-in-law Hannes to the vicinity of the place where the body was later found around the time of the crime. After being questioned in Eisenstadt, Baba is placed in pre-trial detention. Inspector Sifkovits is convinced his mother is innocent and suspects Reinhard Frena, a Tyrolean who had argued with the victim at the fire brigade festival. Sifkovits’s superior, Sebastian Taschner, on the other hand, believes Horvatits lost all of Baba’s savings through speculation and that she murdered him because of it. However, the inspector finds his mother’s money hidden in ice chests. A newspaper carries a for-sale ad for Fredi Horvatits’s house. He had also received a notification from an airline about two one-way tickets to Dubai. The second ticket was issued to Maja Janisch. She had also argued with the victim at the fire brigade festival because he had harassed her. At the place where the body was found, Sifkovits finds a stone that Frena had brought from Tyrol. Frena confesses to the murder, but the inspector does not believe him. Instead, he suspects Frena wants to protect someone with a false confession. The autopsy establishes that Horvatits was already dead when the egg-scoring knife was thrust into his neck. The actual cause of death was sudden cardiac death following severe heart rhythm disturbances. Draft emails to the public prosecutor’s office are found on the dead man’s laptop. According to the drafts, Maja and Frena had grown marijuana together, and Horvatits intended to report them. From the music playing on the radio at the time, Sifkovits works out that Alexandra had prerecorded the supposed live video. Alexandra and Frena are a couple and planned to move to Tyrol together. On the day of the murder, they intended to tell Fredi. She did stab the knife into his neck, but he was already dead by then. The cardiac arrest was caused by an electric shock. Janisch, Maja’s father and an electrician, discovers that Fredi’s tanning bed had been electrified. Haas, an electrician who was Janisch’s predecessor, is arrested for Horvatits’s murder. In 1997, Haas’s young daughter was run over, and the driver fled the scene. Haas had discovered that Horvatits was the driver.
