The story
In Château-Thierry, Judge Ménard is found murdered on the steps of the old courthouse, a wolf mask stuck to his face and containing a phrase from La Fontaine’s fable “The Animals Sick with the Plague.” Captain Laetitia Alfonsi leads the investigation, already knowing that the victim was her father, who never acknowledged her. She is drawn into working with lawyer Thibault Ménard, the judge’s troublesome son and her half-brother; the two had never spoken before.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Judge Ménard is found murdered on the steps of the old courthouse in Château-Thierry, birthplace of the master fabulist Jean de La Fontaine. A wolf mask is stuck to his face, and inside it the police find a phrase, taken from the fable “The Animals Sick with the Plague.” Captain Laetitia Alfonsi decides to lead the investigation, knowing that the victim is her father, who never acknowledged her. She is drawn into working with lawyer Thibault Ménard, the victim’s very troublesome son and her half-brother, whom she had never spoken to until then. Soon afterward, the body of construction contractor Jérôme Cellier is found on the town’s ramparts, with a lion mask on his face. Alfonsi and Ménard realize that the murders are linked to a case once tried by Judge Ménard, and that Guillaume Tourmelin, chief architect of the Historic Monuments, may be the next victim. But they find him just in time, with a fox mask on his face.
