Full plot (contains spoilers)
Once again, Gundula Bundschuh is dealing with all sorts of problems. Her daughter Ricarda is nearing the end of school, but is in danger of failing her Abitur just before she graduates. Her last chance is to succeed in the theater group, whose director has suddenly become unavailable. Much to Ricarda’s dismay, Gundula volunteers at a parents’ evening to help the students and step in as a substitute. She has no idea what problems lie ahead as she rehearses Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with the students. Meanwhile, at home, Gundula’s brother Hadi and his heavily pregnant wife Rose have made themselves comfortable in their camper van in the driveway. They have decided to leave their home in Memmingen, in Swabia, behind and start over in Berlin after the baby is born. Gundula and Hadi’s mother, Ilse, has doubts about whether Hadi is the baby’s father, since Rose had a fling a few months earlier with Reginald Shoemaker, the father of her grandson Rolfi’s ex-fiancée. Ilse herself is meanwhile afraid she may be developing Alzheimer’s and also decides to start over: she buys the Bundschuhs’ vacant neighboring house and begins therapy with Gundula’s therapist, Mr. Mussorkski. Gerald can no longer take the siege by Gundula’s family, so he invites his mother, Susanne, over for support. When Susanne learns about Gundula’s temporary teaching job, she decides, together with Hadi and Gerald, to support Gundula’s production with suitable sets, music, and a new script. But the students resist the radical change of direction at the subsequent rehearsals. When they want to quit as a result and the project is in danger of falling apart, Gundula loses her temper and drives Hadi, Susanne, and Gerald away. After burning the collection of Schlager records Gerald brought along in the schoolyard, she decides on the spur of the moment to move in with her mother in the neighboring house. Susanne sees a chance to set her son up with his childhood friend Sabine, but he refuses. When Gundula also takes her son Matz with her, Gerald and Ricarda have to admit that Gundula’s absence is felt in every respect. Gerald then tries to woo his wife with a serenade beneath her bedroom window, but falls off the ladder and ends up in the hospital with a broken arm. The family reconciles, and Gundula makes one last attempt to stage the play according to her own ideas. On the night of the performance, the audience celebrates her modern adaptation, and Ricarda manages to pass with top marks. Meanwhile, when Rose goes into labor, a surprise in the delivery room leaves Hadi fainting: the baby is black—like its biological father, Reginald.
