A family’s hoped-for Mallorca holiday becomes a chaotic, work-filled ordeal when relatives turn the trip into a rush to open a boutique.

The story

The Bundschuh family heads to Mallorca for what they hope will be a relaxing vacation, accepting an invitation from Gerald’s mother, Susanne. The trip is troublesome from the outset: Gundula and Gerald must search for Gundula’s father Edgar, who has dementia and wanders off, and further mishaps follow on their journey to the hotel. They soon learn that Susanne has a different agenda: her boutique is due to open in six days, and she expects the family to help get it ready. Gundula’s relatives arrive too, while the family would rather enjoy its holiday than work. As tensions and mishaps pile up, the promised rest seems increasingly unlikely.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Bundschuh family wants to treat itself to a relaxing vacation in Mallorca—but they hadn’t reckoned with their relatives. Gundula, her husband Gerald, her father Edgar, who has dementia, and their two children have accepted an invitation from Gerald’s mother, Susanne. Even on the way there, they have to go looking for Edgar because he has wandered off on his own again. When Gundula finds him, they set off in a rental car for the island’s interior, and at the very next rest stop Gerald’s wallet is stolen. On top of that, Edgar simply drives off alone in the car, forcing the Bundschuhs to take a taxi to their hotel, which is in the middle of renovations. As a consolation, Edgar is already waiting for them there, having obediently followed the note in the car. But now it seems Gerald’s suitcase is missing, and he has to borrow clothes left behind at the hotel. That same evening, Gundula’s hypochondriac brother Hadi and his wife Rose, who speaks with a Swabian accent, arrive. They would like to invite Gerald and Gundula to meditate. But the four of them now realize what Susanne is really planning: she intends to open her boutique in six days, and all that is there so far is the shell of the building. To top it all off, Gundula’s mother Ilse has now also arrived and expects to be picked up from the airport. Meanwhile, Susanne keeps pushing harder for her family to finally get to work on her boutique. But the family wants to enjoy their vacation first instead of working. Ricarda is the only one who opts out early. She has met a young man and spends every spare moment with him. To her dismay, she soon realizes that her Nino has a girlfriend. A group outing ends in disaster, however: first Hadi insists on being taken to the hospital because he is convinced he has food poisoning; then, to top it off, Gerald starts the car to head back to the hotel without noticing that Gundula hasn’t even gotten in yet. Gundula’s attempt to take a taxi fails because she has no money with her. The only vehicle that stops on the country road to give her a ride is a pickup, and she has to share its flatbed with sheep. But when the pickup breaks down, she flags down another car. Its driver turns out to be none other than the pickpocket from the rest stop. When he tries to rob her too, Gundula loses her nerve, knocks him unconscious, and drives off in his car. A short time later, the police stop Gundula and find a weapon and stolen goods in the car. Gundula has to ask her husband to pick her up from the police station, which embarrasses her greatly. More than anything, she wants to get back to Germany as soon as possible—especially after discovering that Gerald is making eyes at a hotel employee. This prompts Gundula to seek comfort from her Berlin neighbor, Mr. Mussorkski, who also happens to be vacationing in Mallorca. In the end, though, they both simply fall asleep by the pool. Gundula realizes that her marriage has suffered a little and that she should focus on herself and her career for now. She leaves her family at the vacation resort and flies back to Germany on the next flight.
