A last-minute Christmas rush puts Gundula’s hope for a family gathering that goes right under pressure.

The story

Gundula Bundschuh is a devoted housewife hoping that Christmas will go right for once, but she has begun preparations too late and is already stressed as the relatives arrive. Her husband Gerald works for the tax office, while her brother Hadi wants to present himself as a successful author with his latest self-help book, despite being in debt and envying Gerald’s secure income. Hadi’s wife Rose’s excessive piety irritates the family. Gerald’s mother, who owns a lingerie boutique and enjoys liquor, is frequently at odds with Gundula’s mother, who still acts as though she knows best. Gundula’s mother also feels that no one recognizes how difficult things are for her, with her husband Edgar’s Alzheimer’s.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Gundula Bundschuh is a devoted housewife. Her husband Gerald works for the tax office, and their children, Ricarda and Matz, have turned out well. Christmas is approaching, along with the annual visit from the relatives. Gundula wants “everything to go right for once this year.” But she started preparing for Christmas far too late and is getting stressed. Everyone reluctantly puts on a brave face when the first guests arrive. Gundula’s brother Hadi wants to show everyone what a successful author he is and presents his latest self-help book. In reality, it is a complete flop, and he is in debt, which makes him envious of his brother-in-law and his secure income. Hadi’s wife Rose is excessively religious and annoys the family with her pious airs. Gerald’s mother is a woman who loves to enjoy herself and can’t pass up a bottle of liquor. As the owner of a lingerie boutique, she is constantly at odds with Gundula’s mother, who still hasn’t given up her habit of acting as if she knows best. Gundula’s mother also feels she has to suffer because nobody notices how hard things really are for her: her husband Edgar has Alzheimer’s and amuses everyone with his various antics. He is as delighted as a child by his Christmas present, a light-up globe, and runs out into the street with it. Only much later does the family notice that he is missing and begin looking for him. Since the dog has eaten the Christmas roast, they have to order pizza instead. The cookie dough mixed by her son Matz leads Gundula to assume that he mixed the hashish from a now-empty bag into the dough. But Matz threw it away in the trash. After Rose eats a few Christmas cookies and thinks she has taken hashish, she forgets all about her religious beliefs and then gets drunk as well. After one catastrophe follows another, the Bundschuhs send all their guests home the next morning, but keep Gundula’s father with them.
