Full plot (contains spoilers)
Esther, a rabbi’s daughter, falls in love with Leon Anton, a Jewish Austrian officer, and is expecting his child. Before the two can marry, he is called to the front and is killed. In her father’s eyes, she is a sinner for being pregnant out of wedlock. He disowns her. With no money, she has to give up her newborn for adoption. Hoping for a new life, she emigrates to the United States, where she succeeds in building a career as a singer. After sixteen years there, she is confronted with the fate of an orphanage and decides to return home to find her daughter, Rachel. At the orphanage, she learns only that the child was adopted by a family named Cohen. Her search for Rachel leads to several comic situations. Along the way, she also meets a young, talented violinist who turns out to be Rachel’s boyfriend. By the end of the film, Esther manages to reconcile with her father.
