Full plot (contains spoilers)
The single mother Anna Huber relies heavily on her fifteen-year-old daughter, Amelie. When Anna once again spends the night away from home, she falls down the stairs in her hurried rush that morning, trying to get to her children as quickly as possible. She has to go to the hospital, so village aide Katja Baumann is asked to look after the three children while Anna is incapacitated. Katja takes care of them and quickly notices that Amelie is very troubled. As the eldest, she has taken responsibility for her two siblings, but the girl seems to be carrying a secret. Because Amelie missed an exam due to her mother’s accident, Katja tries to advocate for her and speaks with a teacher she met during an earlier assignment. The teacher tells her that Amelie’s academic performance has fallen drastically over the past few weeks. Her father died when she was young, and since then her mother, Anna, has had nothing but bad luck with men. Amelie’s half-siblings, Patrick and Lisa, have different fathers, neither of whom takes care of them. Katja first tries to find out what might be behind Amelie’s drop in performance; she suspects it has to do with a broken heart. Katja’s suspicion becomes grimly serious when Amelie disappears one night and Katja finds traces of a farewell letter to her siblings on her desk. She immediately informs the police and sets out to look for the girl herself. She finds Amelie in the mountains, on a very high bridge. Katja manages to persuade her in a conversation to come home with her. Amelie confesses that she is pregnant and doesn’t know what to do, because she can’t rely on her mother and people would only gossip. Amelie trusts Katja enough to tell her that the neighbor boy Ingo is the father. Katja also notices the tensions between Amelie and her mother: the girl resents Anna for not taking enough care of the family and for having no plan. When Amelie tells her mother about the pregnancy, Anna reacts just as unconcernedly as Amelie had predicted. But when Anna learns from Katja that Amelie had wanted to take her own life, she realizes she needs to care more for her family and give up her dogged search for a father for the children. Meanwhile, Amelie tells Ingo that he is going to be a father. To her surprise, he stands by her and immediately tells his parents that he wants to marry Amelie as soon as he turns 18. Encouraged by her mother, Amelie is willing to have the baby. Anna, in turn, wants to give up her boyfriend, but Amelie doesn’t want her to. Amelie promptly talks to Martin, who doesn’t seem to mind the three children and wants to stand by Anna and her children. Katja’s daughter Kiki’s life has also changed since Peet’s accident. She takes such competent care of the young man, who is paralyzed from the waist down, that clinic director Gabriel wants to encourage her medical talent and give her the opportunity to study in Philadelphia. But that would mean leaving Peet to his fate, just as she has fallen in love with him. Peet, however, encourages her, and she makes up her mind to study medicine in the United States. This also means Katja will have to say goodbye to her daughter. It is doubly hard for her because things are currently difficult in her relationship with Cem, and they are not speaking to each other at the moment. Katja resents that Cem searched for her father without asking her, even though she has had no contact with him since childhood.
