The story
Artur, a qualified teacher and talented but unambitious artist, works in a copy shop and gives tutoring lessons. He is happily married to Rita, an ambitious teacher on the verge of becoming a school principal, though their days together have settled into routine. That comfortable rhythm changes when Alice, a young woman, comes into the copy shop and enters Artur’s life. He begins a secret affair with her, and the relationship soon brings complications. Alice begins finding a place in his everyday world, getting close to his mother and even his wife, while Artur faces the consequences of trying to keep his new relationship secret.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Artur is in his late thirties, a qualified teacher and talented artist, but not very ambitious. He works in a copy shop, gives tutoring lessons, and is, in fact, happily married to Rita, a teacher who is much more ambitious and therefore on the verge of becoming a school principal. Their free time and married life have become routine; Artur’s favorite thing is to shuffle around their apartment in his pajamas and slippers. The coziness of Artur’s life comes to an end when the young, attractive Alice walks into the copy shop—and into Artur’s life—turning everything upside down. Artur begins a secret affair with Alice, which brings a series of problems in its wake. Alice starts making herself at home in Artur’s life, ingratiating herself with his mother and even his wife. Finally, she tells him that she is pregnant with his child. But soon afterward, Rita becomes pregnant too. After Alice storms into Rita’s apartment and tells her about the affair and the pregnancy, Alice dies. According to Rita, Alice had wanted to kill her with a hockey stick and, during their argument, fell and hit her head on a tabletop. Rita asks Artur to get rid of Alice’s body, just as he had done earlier with the body of Alice’s ex-boyfriend, who had died in Alice’s apartment. Artur dismembers Alice’s body and takes the individual parts, packed in plastic bags, out with the garbage. An inspector tells them that Artur’s mother, who had died shortly beforehand, may have been murdered. Apparently, a young woman had been visiting her frequently lately. The inspector also suspects Artur of murdering his mother. In the end, however, all three deaths remain unexplained. Rita and Artur move with their now-born twins to an apartment in a green, leafy area. Artur suggests “Lucky Break” as the title for his comic. The fact that the twins look Asian does not seem to bother Artur. A year earlier, Rita had gone to the opera with a Japanese man.
