An East German teacher builds a new life in Bavaria, until a former pupil threatens to expose the compromises behind his success.
The story
Adolf Wendler is a teacher and deputy principal at an extended secondary school in East Germany. He criticizes many conditions in the GDR, including chronic shortages that complicate building his own home, but keeps up the appearance of a loyal SED comrade to protect his career. During a 1989 camping holiday in Hungary, he and his wife Maria end up in the West. With help from a well-to-do relative and by ingratiating himself with people there, Wendler secures a job in the Bavarian school system and advances quickly. His new life seems settled until Thomas Gorn, a rebellious former pupil from his East German days, joins his class.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Adolf Wendler is a teacher and deputy principal at an EOS (Extended Secondary School) in East Germany. Although he suffers from the chronic shortages in the GDR while building his own home, and is otherwise critical of the conditions there in many respects, he maintains the outward appearance of a loyal SED comrade for the sake of his career. More by chance than by design, a 1989 camping holiday in Hungary ends with him and his wife Maria in the golden West. Before he knows it, with the help of a well-to-do relative and by ingratiating himself with people in the West, he has a new job in the Bavarian school system and advances in his career without hesitation. It all seems to be going very smoothly: before long, Wendler and his wife are even the proud owners of a handsome home of their own. Everything goes well until one day Thomas Gorn, a rebellious and defiant former pupil from back then, joins his class and exposes his old teacher from the GDR days as a real turncoat and former loyal SED comrade.
