His research uncovers that a descendant of a noble family was born near the end of the Second World War and may have been switched with him. Determined to discover who he really is, Wendel follows the lead to the Felsen-Hepp estate, pretending he wants to write about Bavarian aristocracy to gain entry. A change in the weather forces him to stay overnight, where he meets Countess Walli. The suspicious housekeeper Rosemarie keeps a close watch on his investigation.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Wendel Overmann, a newly retired former hard-charging reporter for a local Munich newspaper, begins to doubt the meaning of life when he learns that he was not the biological son of his recently deceased mother, who had always cared for him. Accustomed to thorough research, he soon discovers that, toward the end of the Second World War, a descendant of a noble family was born and may have been switched with him. Overmann is determined to find out who he really is. It helps that his best friend, Louis, has begun an affair with his ex-wife, Lydia, since this gives him another reason to leave his “old life” behind and make new discoveries that might also lead him down new paths. Despite his age, nothing stops him from striking out in new directions. Overmann uses a ruse to gain access to the Felsen-Hepp family’s estate: he pretends he wants to write an article about the Bavarian aristocracy. Shortly afterward, he meets Countess Walli, and a change in the weather forces him to stay the night. The unexpected guest is not unwelcome to the countess, who has long felt a certain resentment toward her husband, the count, who likes to enjoy himself with other women. Overmann’s investigations do not escape the suspicious housekeeper, Rosemarie: she keeps an eye on him at every turn. Meanwhile, Overmann becomes increasingly accustomed to his role as master of the house, until the real count comes home and sees Overmann as a rival.
