A former soldier’s move to a multicultural Berlin neighborhood unsettles his family life as racist incidents heighten his suspicions.
The story
Former Bundeswehr soldier Harald Westphal moves with his second wife, their child, his two younger daughters from his first marriage, his son-in-law, and his granddaughter into a larger apartment in Berlin-Neukölln. Adjusting to the multicultural neighborhood proves difficult, particularly in his encounters with Yussuf, a Turkish-descended fruit seller. Repeated racist incidents, including an arson attack and an assault on Harald’s daughter Flo, deepen Harald’s suspicions. Meanwhile, Flo befriends Mustafa, a boy from the neighborhood, despite Harald’s displeasure, and Renate, Harald’s old acquaintance and landlady, courts him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Former Bundeswehr soldier Harald Westphal moves to a larger apartment in Berlin-Neukölln with his second wife, their child, his two younger daughters from his first marriage, his son-in-law, and his granddaughter. Problems with the multicultural neighborhood arise quickly, especially with Yussuf, a fruit seller of Turkish descent. Repeated racist incidents, including an arson attack and an assault on his daughter Flo, fuel Harald’s suspicions. While Flo befriends Mustafa, a boy from the neighborhood, much to Harald’s displeasure, and Harald is courted by Renate, an old acquaintance and his landlady, he finds clues to a planned bombing. At the last minute, he identifies Renate’s son Dirk as the mastermind behind the incidents and, together with Yussuf, prevents an explosive device from detonating at a street festival.
