A faithful schoolteacher secretly takes charge of a thriving fashion salon, complicating life with his equally jealous wife.
The story
Professor Meerwald has a problem when a youthful sweetheart leaves him a thriving fashion salon: his wife Wanda is intensely jealous of women. He asks his son-in-law, Dr. Bräutigam, a faithful teacher at a girls’ school, to manage the salon until a buyer can be found. Bräutigam hesitates because his wife Evchen is just as jealous, so he keeps the new sideline from her. He grows to enjoy the work, which brings him into contact with pretty young women, including runway models, making his secret arrangement increasingly delicate.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The old, respected Professor Meerwald has a problem: A former sweetheart from his youth has left him a famous, thriving fashion salon. This would not be such a bad thing if his wife, the domineering Wanda Meerwald, who runs a strict household, were not insanely jealous of everyone and everything, as long as it is female. So old Meerwald brings his son-in-law, Dr. Bräutigam, into the picture. The nasal-voiced senior teacher at a girls’ school, himself a faithful and respectable husband by nature, is supposed to take over the salon’s management until a buyer can be found for this—by the standards of the time—delicate enterprise. The teacher is initially a little reluctant, since his better half, Evchen, is just as jealous as his mother-in-law. So Dr. Bräutigam also says nothing to her about his new sideline. But he increasingly enjoys it, especially since it brings him into constant contact with all sorts of pretty young women, including several runway models. As befits a comedy, this delicate situation gives rise to numerous misunderstandings that land the virtuous teacher-husband in one predicament or another. When his marriage is nearly on the verge of collapse and his teaching career is also in jeopardy, his mother-in-law tracks down the salon’s rightful heir, and peace returns to both marriages.
