After a brochure sparks hopes of romance in Sweden, middle-aged Amedeo travels to Stockholm for business, but his own character repeatedly thwarts his opportunities.
The story
A promotional brochure inspires middle-aged Amedeo with romantic hopes for a stay in Sweden, and he travels to Stockholm on business. Though the opportunities seem tempting, his own character repeatedly gets in the way. He spends an evening at a club for Italian workers and ends up with a local girl who is much younger and just as carefree. The following evening, at the Nobel Prize ceremony, he meets Brigitta and discovers she is married. She invites him to a party at her home, where her husband and friends will also be present.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Enthusiastic about the romantic prospects of a stay in Sweden after reading a promotional brochure, the middle-aged Amedeo travels to Stockholm on business. The opportunities seem tempting, but he sees them slip away time and again because of his own character. He then spends a pathetic evening at a club for Italian workers, ending up with a local girl who is far too young and just as carefree. The following evening, at the Nobel Prize ceremony, Amedeo is approached by Brigitta, whom he discovers is married. She invites him to a party at her home, where he is in the company of her husband and friends, until he gets drunk and stays the night. Further encounters follow, marked by misunderstandings and miscommunications caused by cultural differences in a highly secularized country, culminating in his long-awaited return to Italy, apparently without regrets.
