A priest investigates a prostitute’s murder when the confessional seal prevents him from helping the police clear the man accused of it.

The story

Priest Thomas Fauser faces a moral dilemma when a man confesses in the confessional to murdering a prostitute, while petty criminal Dieter Kleinschmidt has been arrested for the same crime. Bound by the seal of confession, Fauser cannot share what he knows with investigating police officer Klaus Schreier. He is also unable to tell his sister Anna, who is in love with Schreier. Troubled by the thought that an innocent man may be behind bars, Fauser takes a gun and begins investigating in the red-light district, looking for evidence that could prove Kleinschmidt’s innocence.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The priest Thomas Fauser is caught between a rock and a hard place after a man asks him in the confessional for absolution for murdering a prostitute, while the petty criminal Dieter Kleinschmidt has just been arrested by the police for that very crime. As a priest, Fauser is bound by the seal of confession and cannot pass on what he knows to the investigating police officer, Klaus Schreier. He is not even allowed to tell his sister Anna, who is in love with Commissioner Schreier, about the murder confession made in the confessional. But the thought of an innocent man sitting behind bars gives him no peace. Armed with a gun, he investigates in the red-light district, seeking evidence and clues to prove Dieter Kleinschmidt’s innocence.
