When a woman is found dead near his mother’s grave, a Hamburg psychiatrist recognizes the victim and must weigh patient confidentiality against the investigation.
The story
In Hamburg, psychiatrist Dr. Johannes Jessen encounters Inspector Ruiz as a woman’s body is found in Ohlsdorf Cemetery, within sight of his mother’s grave. Ruiz soon visits Jessen for advice on an offender profile. During their conversation, Jessen realizes the victim, Katharina Roth, was a patient of his years earlier and gives Ruiz useful information. Jessen is also treating Robert Mohren, who describes frightening images very similar to the current murder scene. Bound by medical confidentiality, Jessen withholds this from Ruiz, leaving him caught between his professional obligation and the possibility that Mohren’s account could help the investigation.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hamburg psychiatrist Dr. Johannes Jessen happens to run into Inspector Ruiz when a woman’s body is found in Ohlsdorf Cemetery, within sight of Jessen’s mother’s grave. Shortly afterward, Ruiz visits Jessen because he is regarded as an expert and Ruiz wants to ask him about an offender profile. During their conversation, it emerges that Jessen knew the dead woman. Katharina Roth had been his patient years earlier, and once he remembers her, he is able to give the inspector some useful information. Jessen withholds the fact that he currently has a patient who describes terrifying images very similar to the current murder scene, because he feels bound by medical confidentiality. By the time he reconsiders and tells Ruiz about the patient, Robert Mohren, it is too late. The inspector finds clues that suddenly put Jessen himself at the center of the investigation. Katharina Roth had apparently had an appointment with the psychiatrist on the day she was murdered—or at least that was the entry in her diary. Making matters worse, Roth had once complained to the hospital responsible for her care that Jessen had sexually harassed her. Jessen was able to refute the accusation, and Roth withdrew it, but Ruiz considers the incident a possible motive for murder. The psychiatrist’s orderly life is thrown into turmoil, and when he makes the mistake of directly accusing Robert Mohren of killing Katharina Roth, Mohren goes on the offensive. He murders another of Jessen’s patients, with whom Jessen really had been having an affair, leaving Jessen suspected and wanted by the police for this murder as well. To prove his innocence, the psychiatrist investigates his patient Robert Mohren’s past and discovers that Mohren holds him responsible for his father’s death. At the time, Jessen had signed an assessment that was highly unfavorable to Mohren’s father, thereby contributing to his suicide. Mohren apparently now wants to destroy the psychiatrist’s life. Although the police are searching for Jessen with all possible urgency, he is always one step ahead of them. He manages to find Mohren’s hideout, but instead of being able to talk to him, Jessen is overpowered by Mohren. Mohren makes it clear that he does not want to kill the psychiatrist, but to make him suffer. He intends to take away what Jessen loves most. Helplessly, Jessen watches as Mohren disguises himself as a plumber. This is how he gains access to Jessen’s home and overpowers Nora Jessen and her daughter. He ties and gags them, then spills gasoline. Meanwhile, Jessen manages to call Ruiz and convince him of Mohren’s intentions. Ruiz arrives just in time and, with a well-aimed shot, stops Mohren from setting the gasoline alight.
