Full plot (contains spoilers)
Franco and Ciccio La Pera are two Northern soldiers of Sicilian origin who, during the American Civil War, are accused of desertion and sentenced to death. Since the army needs two idiots, under the command of two geniuses, for a spying operation, their execution is postponed. The Southerners, who know about the plan, mistake Ciccio and Franco for the two geniuses, however, and, after a series of comic mishaps, they end up in the hands of the Apache. Despite everything, they will manage both to expose the traitor and to stop the Southern army, doing the North an immense favor. For these actions, they are eventually decorated and promoted, but during the ceremony they still manage to cause a whole lot of trouble.
