The story

Providence, a bounty hunter, captures the big, naive Hurricane Kid and devises a scheme to profit: he turns him over to the nearest town’s sheriff, helps him escape, then captures him again and delivers him to authorities in another state for a new bounty. One day, Hurricane Kid captures Providence in turn, hoping to pass him off as himself and collect the corresponding bounty. In the confusion caused by the switch, both men are left together in the Owensboro jail.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Providence is a bounty hunter who, after capturing the big, naive Hurricane Kid, comes up with an ingenious way to make money: he turns his quarry over to the sheriff of the nearest town, then helps him escape so he can capture him again and deliver him to the authorities in another state, collecting a new bounty. One day, the tables are turned when Hurricane Kid captures his hunter, trying to pass him off as himself and collect the corresponding bounty. In the confusion caused by the switch, they both end up in the Owensboro jail, where their identities are established thanks to the intervention of Colonel-criminologist Mike Goodmorning. Once the truth is restored, Providence collects the bounty and leaves, while Hurricane Kid is locked up but manages to escape and rejoin his jailer. After taking on an inept female thief and the gang of Confederate Colonel Arthur James, the two discover that the Owensboro sheriff paid the bounty with counterfeit dollars. Providence gets more money by beating a pool cheat, and Hurricane Kid hides the winnings in the bell tower of a church belonging to a religious community. However, the church was built illegally on land owned by a private individual who intends to demolish it. The demolition scatters the hidden money over the community, whose members cry out that it is a miracle. Providence recognizes the landowner as Calamity Jane’s cousin, who is wanted in several states, captures him, and takes him away, tying him up together with a couple of members of Arthur James’s gang and a resigned Hurricane Kid.
