When a teenager is murdered, Detective Judith Mohn investigates an alibi-cleared dealer and a trail of hateful messages that may threaten the victim’s younger sister.

The story

After a drug raid at a youth center, detective Judith Mohn finds the daughter of friends dead in the trunk of dealer Marc Declercg’s car. The victim is Jette; her fourteen-year-old sister Sarah is devastated, and Mohn hopes Sarah can help clarify what happened. Declercg has an airtight alibi, so suspicion falls on Jette’s boyfriend Tom, who also deals drugs and initially flees police questioning. As Mohn’s team continues investigating, Jette’s laptop reveals a tampered webcam and hateful messages from someone calling himself “Joker.” When Sarah is later struck by a car after apparently being followed from the youth center, the case becomes more urgent.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After a drug raid at the youth center, Detective Chief Inspector Judith Mohn discovers the daughter of a family she is friends with dead in the trunk of the fleeing dealer Marc Declercg’s car. Heavy-hearted, she has to deliver the sad news to the Mertens family. Fourteen-year-old Sarah is especially devastated by the death of her sister Jette—the two had been very close. Mohn hopes Sarah can give her clues about what happened and who the culprit was, since it could not have been Declercg: he has an airtight alibi and was robbing a gas station at the time of the murder, as surveillance footage proves. This puts Jette’s boyfriend, Tom, under suspicion, since he also deals drugs and immediately evades police questioning by fleeing. His youth worker, however, persuades him to turn himself in. He will be held in pretrial detention until his innocence is proven. Nevertheless, Judith Mohn and her team continue investigating every possibility. An analysis of Jette’s laptop reveals that someone must have tampered with her webcam, allowing recordings of her to be made without her knowledge. There is also a chat history showing that Jette had received several hate messages from someone calling himself “Joker.” It seems that after Jette, he has now set his sights on her sister too: late one evening, Sarah is hit by a car after a young man apparently follows her from the youth center. Sarah and Jette often spent time at the youth center, which is run by their uncle, Ben Mertens, and seemed to be safe there. While Judith Mohn searches for “Joker,” she finds a very intimate chat contact with someone called “Leo” on Sarah’s phone. When she asks Sarah about it, Sarah says he is the only one who understands her and always has time for her. Mohn thinks it is possible that “Joker” and “Leo” are one and the same person. While she focuses on the boy who followed Sarah before her accident, she fails to notice that the girl is in danger again. By chance, Sarah discovers that “Leo” is none other than her uncle Ben. Horrified, she flees from him, just as he realizes he has been found out. But Ben Mertens overpowers her and abducts her in the youth center’s minibus. In a panic, he races around with her until the vehicle comes to a stop dangerously close to a drop-off in the woods. Since the minibus is painted in a distinctive way, it is quickly located and followed. By this point, Mohn has also figured out that Mertens is the key figure. She now learns that he had an argument with his niece Jette after she confronted him with intimate digital photos of her sister. Jette hit her head so hard that she died instantly. In her personal life, Judith Mohn also suffers a devastating blow: her husband Niklas leaves her on the very day of their wedding anniversary.
