The story
Sörensen has stopped taking his medication for anxiety when, one night, he nearly hits a disturbed young blind woman who runs in front of his car. He takes her to the police station, arranges for a doctor to examine her, and tries to learn who she is. She says she fears the Devil and has spent her life inside, protected by her father from “the world out there.” After she trusts Sörensen and his dog, Cord, he takes her home. She identifies herself as Jette and gives him her address. The following day, Sörensen and his colleague Jennifer Holstenbeck visit the address and discover a man dead in the living room, beginning an investigation into Jette’s past.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sörensen has stopped taking his medication for anxiety. One night, while driving, he nearly hits a disturbed young blind woman who runs out in front of his car. He takes her to the police station, has her examined by a doctor, and tries to find out who she is. She says she is afraid of the Devil and has therefore always stayed inside the house. Her father had protected her from “the world out there.” Since she has come to trust Sörensen and his dog, Cord, he takes the girl home with him. She tells him her name is Jette and where she lives. The next day, when he goes to check the address with his colleague Jennifer Holstenbeck, they find a man with numerous stab wounds dead in the living room. Sörensen questions the neighbor, Linus Hoekstra, who acts strangely and says during the identification that the dead man was not Jette’s father. It turns out that many years ago there was a group of Bible-believing Christians, which included Jette and her father. Because of her disability, he had kept the blind girl hidden from the world in the cellar all those years, supposedly because disabilities were a punishment from God. Even the neighbors didn’t know that Dierk Lorenzen had a daughter. Sörensen strongly suspects that Jette’s father, who has vanished without a trace, stabbed the man to death. When he suddenly turns up again and another dead man is lying in his living room, he says he wasn’t the killer. He says he can’t explain the man on the sofa: the man had simply been sitting there, and Jette was gone. During questioning, he admits he is not Jette’s father. But the autopsy establishes that the dead man on the sofa was her biological father. The cult-like group around Jette and her foster father, Lorenzen, increasingly proves to be a web of conspiracies and secrecy. Neighbor Linus Hoekstra is also found murdered. It turns out that Jette is the unwanted daughter of cult member Martina Braasch. When, after years, she unexpectedly comes face to face with her daughter’s father, she stabs him so that no one will find out about her child. She does the same to Frank, another group member, who has also learned about the child. The group leader, Linus Hoekstra, is someone she intends to confide in, but she ends up killing him too. Sörensen sends Jette to her grandparents, who live in town. At the end, Sörensen and Jennifer sit opposite each other at a speed-dating event—a friendship seems to be taking shape.
