The story
Ruth, the wife of politician Gert Keller, meets Helena, married to jeweler Dieter Rossmann, on a rooftop. Helena is waiting with a rifle to shoot her unfaithful husband, but Ruth stops her. Ruth herself is about to jump from the roof when police officer Lombroselli Junior saves her. Later, Ruth invites Helena to the cinema, where they watch a film about two protagonists committing murders on each other’s behalf. Inspired by it, the women agree that each will kill the other’s husband, giving her an alibi for her own husband’s murder.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ruth is married to politician Gert Keller, and Helena to jeweler Dieter Rossmann. The two women meet on the roof of a multi-story building. Helena is lying in wait there with a rifle, intending to shoot her unfaithful husband, who is having sex with his employee, Anita Hiessmayer, in the apartment opposite, but Ruth stops her. Ruth herself is about to jump from the roof to her death, directly in front of her husband’s campaign office, but police officer Lombroselli Junior saves her. Later, Ruth and Helena meet again. Ruth invites Helena to the cinema, where a film is showing in which the two protagonists take turns committing murders on each other’s behalf. The women agree to kill each other’s husbands, so that each will have an alibi for her own husband’s murder. After their double-murder plan falls through, they decide to go into hiding and make their husbands believe they have murdered them, so that the men will be sent to prison for life. When Gert and Dieter discover that their wives were planning to kill them, they in turn plot to kill each other’s wives. Ruth’s grandmother tells Chief Inspector Rudolf Richter and his colleague Lombroselli that Ruth feels threatened by her husband. Dieter sabotages Ruth’s car, causing it to plunge into the water and sink. The two police officers follow Ruth because of the grandmother’s warning, and Lombroselli tries to save her once again. A search operation proves unsuccessful, however, and Ruth remains missing. The police find scuba-diving equipment in the car’s trunk. The two investigators also discover that Ruth and Helena had planned a double murder. Richter therefore initially suspects that the plan failed and Ruth killed herself in the lake. However, the police discover that the car had been tampered with and remotely controlled. The investigators consequently conclude that the husbands found out about the double murder their wives had planned and turned the tables on them. Further inquiries reveal that Dieter Rossmann emptied his accounts because his wife had been kidnapped and he had to pay a ransom of around two million. After the supposed ransom handover, however, Helena remains missing. In fact, Dieter has hidden the money. Chief Inspector Richter suspects that the women wanted to make their husbands appear to have murdered them, so the men would go to prison. But Gert Keller may have hired a hitman to kill Helena. Acting on a tip from an informant, Keller is caught collecting photographic evidence in a phone booth showing Helena dead. Gert Keller is arrested. The television news reports the court’s verdict: Gert Keller and Dieter Rossmann have been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering each other’s wives. Lombroselli follows Ruth’s grandmother, carrying the ransom money Dieter had hidden, and she leads him to Ruth, Helena, and their lovers. Lombroselli had found a piece of another lead weight in the car and knew that there had been a second diving suit in the submerged vehicle, meaning Ruth had survived. The people now in on the plan decide to split the ransom money. Ruth and Lombroselli kiss, and he announces that he is leaving the police force.
