After her husband’s death leaves her a secluded railway station, Helene must learn to share it with its irascible longtime tenant.
The story
Helene had planned a trip around the world with her husband, Georg, after his retirement, but he dies suddenly of a heart attack. He leaves her a decommissioned railway station he had secretly bought. Reluctantly, Helene grows attached to the dilapidated building and moves in with her friends Rosina and Luise, only to discover that Arthur, Georg’s former colleague, already lives there under a lifetime lease. Arthur resents the company, and the new housemates clash over dividing the rooms and coping with the noise. The women, in turn, dislike his unapproachable manner, leaving them to find a way to coexist in their unusual home.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Helene had actually planned a trip around the world for herself and her husband, Georg, as soon as he retired. But Georg suddenly dies of a heart attack. He leaves his wife a decommissioned railway station, which he had bought without her knowledge. Reluctantly, she grows attached to the dilapidated building and moves in with her two friends, Rosina and Luise. However, Arthur, a former colleague of Georg’s, already lives there. He has a lifetime lease and is not at all pleased to have company. They soon begin arguing with him over how to divide up the rooms. The increasing noise in the house also bothers him. For their part, the women dislike the man’s unapproachable manner. But in time they find compromises and begin to love their secluded life. This quiet is “disturbed” when Luise introduces another lodger. Joe, a likeable young student, is looking for somewhere to stay, and Luise has fallen in love with him despite their age difference. Arthur begins to “thaw” a little as Helene takes an increasing interest in the railway. He even tells her about his life and all the places he traveled to as a train driver. The two get along better with each passing day. Luise continues to adore her Joe, who, however, is more interested in Helene’s daughter, Corinna. When Luise notices this, she is deeply hurt. Helene has had enough of the little problems around her and decides to go on the planned trip around the world with Arthur.
