Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film begins with Catherine being arrested at her husband Gordon’s funeral, suspected of having murdered him. We then learn how she met Gordon. While on a hunting trip, her husband Roberto, an Italian who organizes hunting excursions for wealthy people, is injured by a lion and has to be taken to hospital. Pilot Gordon Coburn happens to be nearby and is able to fly Roberto to the nearest hospital in his propeller plane. A romance develops between the adventurous Gordon and Catherine. Because of this relationship, she divorces Roberto and begins a new marriage with Gordon. Together, they buy a farm in Tanzania. Soon afterward, Catherine becomes pregnant. Meanwhile, Gordon works as a cargo pilot. One day, he has a tragic accident in his propeller plane at an airport, killing two Maasai children. This happens on the very night their daughter is born. At first, Gordon tries to hide the incident from his wife. He then loses his job and turns to alcohol. This damages their marriage, as Gordon and Catherine argue frequently. Gordon often disappears for days at a time, and he cheats on, beats, and rapes Catherine. On top of this, a severe drought causes the farm to run into financial difficulties. One day, when Gordon comes home drunk yet again, a shot is fired in the bedroom. Catherine is suspected of having murdered him. Gordon’s parents and his brother Duncan are convinced she did it. Catherine, however, insists that Gordon died by suicide. In the end, the police investigation confirms what happened that evening, and Catherine is acquitted.
