Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is about Tobias, an aspiring director who plans to make a documentary about his brother Markus and Markus’s band, Hansen. But he still has the meeting with his brother and his girlfriend Ellen in Hamburg a year earlier on his mind. He simply cannot stop wondering whether the two of them might have had something going on. Tobias therefore accompanies the band on its tour through northern Germany. Life on tour becomes intense when Ellen joins them and runs into Markus again. At some point, Tobias misses one of the band’s performances. After the show, Ellen and Markus go looking for Tobias and find him completely devastated and desperate. He voices his fear: Did the two of them have something going on a year ago in Hamburg? At first, they try to reassure him and deny everything. But then Markus admits that he slept with Ellen because they had both been completely drunk. He also believes, however, that he was the “driving force” and that Ellen had not wanted it—though she later denies this. Tobias does not know how to react. Eventually, he cannot take it any longer, and when the band is about to leave for another city, he decides to leave Ellen standing out in the cold, which leads to a major argument among the three main characters. Before the final performance in Berlin, Tobias returns to his apartment and finds it completely empty: Ellen’s things are gone.
