Full plot (contains spoilers)
Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed in a provincial German town, is the father of an illegitimate child he had with Marie, his mistress. Woyzeck supplements his pay by doing work for the captain and agreeing to take part in medical experiments conducted by the doctor. For one of these experiments, the doctor requires Woyzeck to eat nothing but peas. Woyzeck’s mental health deteriorates, and he begins to experience a series of apocalyptic visions. Marie soon grows tired of Woyzeck and turns to a drum major who, in an ambiguous scene in Marie’s room, probably rapes her. Jealous, Woyzeck confronts the drum major, who beats and humiliates him. Woyzeck then stabs Marie to death near a pond. He throws the knife into it, and while trying to wash off the blood, he hallucinates that he is swimming in Marie’s blood.
