Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story is structured like an erotic round dance. The young nobleman Fabian von Weyden, his lover Eugènie, and his very young niece, Countess Annette, invite guests to an erotic weekend rendezvous at their castle. Among those invited are the beautiful Arabella and the wealthy Phileas Leuwenstam, a man in his prime; they are a couple who have not yet consummated their marriage. Manuel da Silva and Felicitas, a couple who have since grown estranged, also arrive at the grand country estate. To get everyone in the mood for erotic indulgence, they begin reading Balzac’s sensual and daring story. Guided by the resourceful maid Sophie, a lively game of musical partners soon gets underway, with more guests joining in. At an orgiastic, bacchanalian grape festival, all inhibitions and clothing are finally shed. While everyone gives themselves to everyone else, Sophie, the mistress of ceremonies, sets Annette and Manuel apart from the others, hoping to bring about a partner swap. Manuel asks for his niece’s hand in marriage and is caught by surprise by Fabian. Sophie then brings Felicitas together with the much older Leuwenstam, who, in the darkness of night, mistakes the breathtaking noblewoman for his wife. When he realizes his mistake, Phileas immediately wants to divorce his wife so that he can then marry the buxom beauty. And she is quite receptive to the proposal. Finally, Fabian too seeks to marry Eugènie, and the ronde d’amour comes to a happy ending for everyone.
