A medical student’s secret work as a go-go dancer entangles her nightclub friends with a conservative city councillor bent on shutting the club down.
The story
Medical student Monique Brahm moves from Berlin to Munich to live with her strict, conservative uncle Eberhard Adler and continue her studies. To pay her way, she has secretly performed at night as a go-go dancer with the Mark-Brothers, whose booking at the Blow-Up nightclub is threatened by a contract problem. Monique agrees to keep dancing with them until they find a replacement, while meeting university student Peter Mertens, who falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Eberhard—who serves on the city council—wants the club closed, a goal also encouraged by complaints from local residents and the interests of his brother-in-law Alois.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Medical student Monique Brahm moves from Berlin to Munich to live with her uncle Eberhard Adler and continue her studies there. Her strict, conservative uncle, who serves on the city council, has learned that she had to work on the side to pay for her studies. What he does not know is that she performed at night as a go-go dancer with the musicians of the Mark-Brothers. The Mark-Brothers get a booking at the Blow-Up nightclub, owned by Conny Angel. However, Conny has signed a contract with Monique for the group’s engagement, and so the booking is in danger of falling through. The Mark-Brothers persuade Monique to dance with them until they find a suitable replacement. Monique, meanwhile, meets university student Peter Mertens, who falls in love with her. Eberhard Adler has long been intent on closing the Blow-Up. Besides his domineering wife Grethe, his brother-in-law Alois Kranz is also driving the effort. Alois knows a brewery owner who would like to turn the large club into a tavern. Since numerous complaints have recently come in from local residents who want the club closed for moral reasons, putting an end to the Blow-Up would also suit politician Eberhard’s career interests. During an inspection tour with morals officer Hummel, the two men end up at the Blow-Up—and in its large pool. At Conny’s request, a reporter from the Vienna-based PornoPress publishing house photographs the compromising scene. Eberhard feels at home in the club, is dried off by Conny’s girlfriend Inga, and is later invited to join a tour of the city’s strip clubs. Hummel receives the evening’s photographs by post, so he and Eberhard are unable to take any further action against the Blow-Up for the time being. Hummel goes to Vienna to try to get the publisher to hand over the pictures. Eberhard, meanwhile, has not spent the night at home, and Grethe confronts him when he returns. He makes up an elaborate story about a former school friend he has supposedly rediscovered, a wealthy shipowner named Konstantin. He claims to have spent the night with him and his wife, who suffers from migraines. Conny, who learned Eberhard’s identity from Monique, had intended to talk to him about the future of the Blow-Up, but now overhears the invented story at the door. He knocks and introduces himself as Konstantin. Grethe is taken with him and invites him and his wife to dinner and to stay the night. She does not know that Conny, who arrives with Inga, is recording all their conversations with a hidden microphone. During the night, Grethe tries to get to Conny, whom she adores. Eberhard wants to go to Inga and Conny’s club in the end. Locked doors, the family dog, various attempts to get in through windows, and the household staff lead to a series of chaotic situations. The next day, Alois turns up and tries to persuade Conny to get involved in shady business dealings involving Greek ships. He tells him that he and Eberhard have been taking bribes for a long time. Although Eberhard realizes that Conny now has enough on him to keep the Blow-Up open, he cannot stop Alois and Grethe from involving him in a plan to close the club. Only when Conny’s tape recorder containing the recorded conversations and the photographs from PornoPress come to light do all those involved realize that they had better not do anything. The family dog steals the cassette, and a wild chase begins to recover the evidence. Monique is the only one who does not join in; she would rather drive off with her new boyfriend, Peter.
