A pregnant woman is left by her partner for a theater designer whose own former lover wants no further contact.

The story

Natalia, pregnant by Stéphane, is left by him for Sabine, a theater set designer. Sabine has just emerged from a failed love affair with Bruno, an actor. Natalia attempts suicide but is rescued by a friend. At the theater, its director bars Sabine and tells her Bruno no longer wants to see her, following a late-night confrontation in which she threatened him. At the outset, both women are left dealing with ruptured relationships, while Stéphane’s choice and Bruno’s refusal leave the romantic entanglements unresolved.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Natalia, who is pregnant by Stéphane, is left by him for Sabine, a theater set designer. Sabine, too, has just come out of a love affair with Bruno, an actor. While Natalia tries to kill herself and is rescued by a friend, the theater director closes the theater doors to Sabine and tells her that Bruno no longer wants to see her, after she showed up in her former lover’s bedroom one night and threatened him with a knife. Some time passes. On tour in Spoleto with a production, Bruno runs into Sabine again. The two argue, kiss, and make up. But it won’t last long. Meanwhile, after her father dies, Natalia finds Stéphane at her home, embracing the son he had insisted on seeing. Sabine would like to get back together with Stéphane, but he wants nothing to do with her. The woman also has a confrontation with Bruno’s wife. At a New Year’s Eve party, Stéphane and Natalia find their rapport again: they laugh, drink, and are cheerful. Sabine watches it all, and at dawn she appears in front of Bruno and shoots him. Stéphane follows her into the snow... Natalia’s little boy is now two years old: his mother introduces Stéphane to him as an uncle. The child is also named Stéphane: the two of them leave, and Natalia cries.
